A note on sustainability
We try to operate Mountain Home with as little impact on the earth as possible. We try to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible, and we have 4 composting bins. We host “green” events that minimize waste. We use laundry detergent in a returnable plastic container. We serve milk from reusable, glass bottles, buy organic and locally-sourced foods as much as possible, and serve only real maple syrup. We make food from scratch or from minimal ingredients as much as possible, including our own jams and jellies (in many cases from berries grown on family property or apples grown locally). We use cloth tablecloths and napkins and washable plates, glasses, cups and utensils. Our breakfasts are vegetarian by default, but we work with our guests to meet all their dietary restrictions and can easily accommodate guests who need to stay gluten free, nut free, dairy free, soy free, keto, low salt, vegetarian, and/or vegan. Our kitchen is not set up as strictly Kosher or Halal, but we will do our best to accommodate all dietary needs.
Get Out (and Enjoy Yourself)
Mountain Home is just 120 steps from the Appalachian Trail which spans from Maine to Georgia and attracts worldwide backpackers every year. We are just 5 miles from the Skyline Drive entrance to Shenandoah National Park, and the Park has 512 miles of walking trails, including "Old Rag". Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park is a 16 minute drive, and a National Forest and Wildlife Management Areas are nearby.
There are 6 wineries within a 5-mile radius from Mountain Home, as well as cideries, meaderies and breweries. Nearby Front Royal is home to several great restaurants.
You’ll find orchards, pick-your-own farms, farm markets and country stores in neighboring counties.
History is all around. You’ll find museums, historic homes, and battlefields. You can also explore history at the National and State Parks nearby.
We have indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities: Front Royal is the Canoe Capital of Virginia with many boating activities available on the nearby Shenandoah. Horseback riding and golf are also nearby. Skyline and other caverns make a great visit in any weather. We also have bowling, first run movies, a game store and arcade and museums nearby. Disk golf and skate parks aren’t far away. There is even a drive-in movie theater in Stevens City, just north of Front Royal.
We'll help you make the most of your time in Front Royal and the surrounding Shenandoah Valley!
Plan Your Hike
Hiking is sort of our specialty. We have resources in the Parlor, and are happy to provide suggestions and advice. Check out our Hikers page for Hiker Services.

The Cabbin is our dog-friendly space, and we would be happy to accommodate your pet for $15. We’ll even provide a plush dog bed and bowls. Please inquire when you book your stay for more information. No dogs are allowed in the Main House.
